There are many needs for criminal justice practitioners, both societal and
individual. Without criminal justice professionals to protect and serve our communities, it would
be chaotic and unstructured. In this composition, I will discuss three individual needs for
criminal justice practitioners and three societal needs for criminal justice practitioners. Three
individual needs for criminal justice practitioners include security, protection, and justice. Three
societal needs for criminal justice professionals are drug use, gang violence, and youth in the
criminal justice system.
Criminal justice practitioners include law enforcement officers, judges, and correctional
officers. Each of these professionals serve a vital role in fulfilling individual needs throughout
the system. Security is one of the three significant needs that people count on law enforcement
officers for. Officers need to have different soft skills to be able to serve their communities
effectively. These skills include empathy, compassion, active listening, adaptability, building a
rapport, and critical thinking and observation (Pittaro, 2018). These skills are beneficial when
dealing with individuals. Whether it is a victim, their family, or a witness, these skills will come
in handy when trying to aid an individual who was affected by a crime. Protection is the second
need that individuals look to criminal justice professionals for. When a person has become a
victim of a crime, the fear they may feel can be hindering. Having protection from law
enforcement may help calm the victim. Another criminal justice professional that helps in
protecting individuals are correctional officers. At times they may need to protect a particular
inmate from other inmates that want to harm them due to the crime they have committed,
although it is not the job of other inmates to take matters of justice into their own hands. Thus
leading to the third and final individual need of criminal justice professionals, justice. Judges and
