Overcoming and Resolving Conflicts
Driving down the road and a bright orange light start to flash on the dash then the car
starts to run rough. You notice that it is the check engine light and fear the worst as there is a
problem or conflict within components of the vehicle. The same can be found in most any
situation and especially in the competitive nature of businesses and organizations in today’s
economically driven work. A conflict between two workers can have lasting affects on the team,
the department, and even the organization as a whole. However, conflicts can be defused about
as quick as they arise through communication, negotiations, and understanding the different
viewpoints.
Negotiation is a major factor in deconflicting a situation before it spirals out of control.
Being able to understand what the two individualsare wanting to accomplish and how it affects
the team. Knowing the who, how, and what of this conflict situation is the primary step to
resolving it. (Zofi, 2012) Once they can see what each other’s vision is then the discussion can
begin about how both ideas can be implemented into the project for the best outcome to emerge.
Having the uncomfortable conversations at the beginning and offering solutions to the problems
from an outside source is a great way to resolve any conflict. This doesn’t have to be a
negotiation between just the two members that are in conflict with each other due to reasoning
that now the whole team is behind. Now the entire team is involved in rectifying the situation
and coming up with a solution and an even playing field to accomplish the task.
For this situation I would use the conflict management approach of collaboration. This
management style is known to produce the best long-term results for the team and organization
