Introduction
A vast responsibility of caregivers is used to help clients in a vulnerable time in their life
or to prevent clients reaching a point in life of needing assistance in their health (Olowokere &
Okanlawon, 2015). The Neuman systems model (NSM) was created by Betty Neuman in the
mid-1970 and subject to some changes, her first book edition released in 1982. NSM is still used
today in nursing as a “comprehensive, flexible, wholistic, and systems-based guide” (Butts &
Rich, 2018, p. 472) to respond and advance patient health and wellbeing. I would like to explain
to you the philosophy behind this model and concepts that support the model. I will specifically
relate this model to the concepts of nursing as well as how it can be applied to advanced nursing
practice.
The Goal and Function of Neuman Systems Model
The goal of Betty Neuman’s model is maintaining equilibrium under certain variables
that work together in order to reach homeostasis (Butts & Rich, 2018). According to Lyttle et al.,
(2018), the five variables the framework considers are “physiological, psychological,
sociocultural, developmental, and spiritual” (p. 473). The structure of this framework has lines of
resistance as a means for protection and functions to stabilize client’s health. Butts & Rich
(2018) describe the lines of resistance as “the flexible line of defense forms the outer barrier …
serves as a protective buffer system for the client’s normal or stable state” (p. 474). Stressors that
can disturb the lines of defense can be intrapersonal, interpersonal, or extrapersonal created by
client’s environment. A study using Neuman’s framework proved the importance of the ability to
define client’s needs, mediate an attainable goal, and implement interventions to reduce stressors
so that goals are achieved and the client has an awareness of the situation (Diniz et al., 2019).
