Module: Social Psychology

Week 10 – Violence Against Women – FGM (female genital mutilation)

What is FGM (Femle Genital Mutilation)?
 There are 4 classifications in how FGM is categorised
 Type 1 is the least intrusive
 Type 3 is most intrusive and extreme

Over 200 million girls worldwide have undergone FGM.

What about home?
 We don’t actually think that it might be closer to home
 London has the highest percentage

By whom?
 The practice is normally carried out by women. They have no medical training.
It is like a job to them. There is no sterilisation of the tools used.
 Need to be mindful of how we tackle this because this practice is part of
people’s culture.
 It is considered a traditional practice in some cultures.
 There is a reason why it is done by women.
 Instrument used: metal arrow head tool
 No anaesthetic is used
 Majority happens to girls under the age of 5 or before they have their rites of
passage
 “Cutting season”  girls (around 14 years of age) who are in the UK, during
the summer holidays, they are flown abroad on the pretence that they are
going on a holiday to have FGM.

Theoretical Framework
 FGM has nothing to do with religion
 Done through social convention/social norms
 Belief that it will acquire social status and respect
 Ethnicity
 Religion
 Marriageability
