Unit 24- Introduction to Counselling Skills for Health and Social Care
Assess how the development of counselling skills affects self-development (M2)
In this section of my work, I will be assessing how the development of counselling skills
affects self-development. Self-development can be defined as a process in which an
individual’s character or abilities are developed over time. This way, an individual can take
steps in order to improve the skills you have already gained and can learn new skills that can
benefit you in your career or daily life, etc. For example: self-development can be taking
courses at university level to learn new skills and new things that connect to your career.
I feel that the development of counselling skills has affected my self-development in
numerous ways. Firstly, I feel that I have learnt how to use the three core conditions
effectively and appropriately when supporting individuals and using counselling skills to help
them. This is because I have been able to become more empathic, as I can put myself in the
client’s shoes and understand things from their perspective and how they must be feeling in
the situation that they are in. I think that I naturally have a caring personality and I am an
active listener, but I feel that since my counselling skills have developed, my ability to take
an empathic approach to clients has increased as well as the other two core conditions. For
example: my ability to become more congruent and not being so quick to judge people has
enabled me to accept everyone and people who come from diverse backgrounds and have
diverse situations that they require assistance in. I feel that my ability to accept other
individuals and treat them equally regardless of their differences has resulted because of
how I have become more accepting of myself. The counselling sessions and skills practice
has enabled me to become more self-accepting and not be too harsh on myself and realise
that everyone is different and nobody is perfect.
I feel that this is another improvement that I have made whilst the development of my
counselling skills, as before skills practice I was quick to judge people including myself for
the things that I did right and wrong and I criticised the wrong things that I used to do and
doubt my abilities especially the work that I produced in college. However, now I have
realised that nobody is perfect and have accepted the fact that everyone makes mistakes
and that everyone has their own ability. I am now able to apply congruence during skills
practice when I am supporting a client or a friend effectively. Nevertheless, I think that I am
now also able to understand the views of others and still treat them with respect, equality
and support them regardless of their views, differences and personality. This is called
unconditional positive regard (UPR) and is the third core condition that I feel I can put into
practice in a supportive relationship effectively. This is because I have become more relaxed
about diverse opinions that are different to myself and my surroundings and have a sense of
respect and acceptance that someone is coming to me for help and feel that it is my
responsibility to help and support the client if I am able to, rather than judge them for the
person that they are. This has also helped to raise my self-esteem and self-concept as well
as my courage and confidence levels, as I have become more confident as a person and
more accepting of myself.
