1A) Describe the reasons why we use SMT in the manufacture of
an electronic circuit.
Surface mount technology is used to manufacture an electronic circuit, rather
than a traditional through hole method. The main purpose of using Surface
mount technology is to use fewer holes to drill into the PCB, which minimizes the
amount of errors. Using surface mount technology is also used to save money in
the long term and to increase profits. Furthermore, surface mount technology
allows components to be placed on either circuit board. Another reason to use
Surface mount technology is that it reduces your costs and budgets, as the
component parts cost less than the through hole parts. When using Surface
mount technology they require smaller parts and the manufacturing of them is a
lot cheaper, where as a traditional leaded electronic components
doesn’t allow that. Therefore, this results in to the Surface
mount technology being less heavy which means they can be
soldered easily and because they are lighter, they take up less
space and because there is less space you wont need as much
material. The more material that is sued the more expensive it
will be and the more complicated it will be to assemble.

, 1B) Describe the identification of SMD components. Making
reference to the devices data sheets.
Surface mount devices are shaped as chips, but the components are never
labelled. To work out the size of the Surface mount device, you have to multiply
the last two digits by 10 to give you the width in millimetres. To work out the
length you have to multiply the first two digits by 10 and that will give you the
length in millimetres. The common size for chip resistors and capacitors is 1206.
