The basic principle of the brain anatomy was based on phenology but that is now considered a pseudoscience. Current brain anatomy has been examined using numerous computerized technologies and they have been able to study numerous psychology processes.
QUESTIONS/KEY NOTES
WORDS/KEY NAMES
Key words: The brain anatomy has roots in in phenology. Phenology is the basic ide
Phenology that the anatomy of the brain can be seen on the skull. Phenologists
believe that the size of the skull
Pseudoscience represents different parts of the brain.
CAT scans This is now considered a
MRI pseudoscience.
EEG
PET The basic principle of phenology is still
used today, that is that different parts
of brain are involved in different
Key names: psychological processes. But it should
be noted that this is true to only an
extent.
Brain anatomy is explored using multiple different technologies:
Computerized axial tomography (CAT) scans. This is an internal
image of the brain.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). It exposes you to a very
powerful magnetic. It uses magnetic properties of hydrogen in the
body. The radio frequency pulse flips the hydrogen atoms. The
hydrogen atoms then return to their original state and thereby emit
a signal that is measured and used to form an image of the brain.
o Different substances of the brain emit different energies.
Electroencephalogram (EEG). Records the electrical activity of
neurons. Electrodes are attached to the scalp and brain waves can
be traced. EEGs have been used to study sleep, and it has been
found that during a typical night’s sleep, we go through a series of
stages marked by different patterns of brain wave. This doesn’t tell
us about what they are feeling or what part of the brain is active,
however.
PET scan (Positron Emission Tomography) which uses a radioactive
marker as a way of studying the brain at work.
Scans are based on the principle that the brain requires energy to function
and that the regions more involved in the performance of a task will use up
more energy. What the scan, therefore, enables researchers to do is to
provide ongoing pictures of the brain as it engages in mental activity.
These methods for producing images of brain structure and functioning
have been extensively used to study language and PET scans are
producing evidence that suggests that the Wernicke-Gerschwind model
may not after all be the answer to the question of how language is possible.
