In this assessment you will have opportunities to provide evidence against the following criteria.
Indicate the page numbers where the evidence can be found.
Criteria To achieve the criteria the evidence must show Task no. Evidence
reference that the learner is able to:
Describe the operation of one seal, one type of
P3 packing and two different types of bearing, giving 1
a typical application for each one.
Describe two different types of screwed fastening
P4 and two different types of rivet giving a typical 2
application for each one. [IE4]
Justify the choice of engineering components in a
D2 3
given engineering application.

Purpose of this assignment
This unit aims to give learners knowledge of the components and systems commonly used
in lubrication systems, transmissions and plant equipment.
Scenario
You work for a voluntary organisation which has taken on the challenge of establishing an
Engineering training school in an under developed nation.
The purpose of this school is to train people how to use machinery which will help them to
make water pumps and engines.
In this instance, you need to investigate and describe the purpose and use of the different
types of seals, packing and bearings, explaining the function and applications of seals
packing and bearings and explaining the use of screwed fastenings and rivets.
Task 1
Describe with aid of diagrams and sketches the principle of operation and application
of one type of seal, one type of packing and two different types of bearing.
(This provides evidence for P3)
Task 2
Describe with the aid of diagrams/sketches/images two different types of screwed fastener
and two different types of rivet and give a typical application for each one.
(This provides evidence for P4)
Task 3
Justify giving advantages and disadvantages of using bearings, seals, packing and
fastenings in the assembly of an engineering system to facilitate the pumping and treating
of clean drinking water for a client.
(This provides evidence for D2)
