1.1 Liberalism can be defined as a theory about the proper relationship between the
individual and the state. Liberalism alsocontainsa broader account of the relationship
between the individual and society.1
Liberalism resembles principles and institutions, recognizable by certain
characteristics like individual freedom, political participation, private property, and
equality of opportunity. In International Relations it explains how human reason,
progress, individual rights and freedoms can give rise to more peaceful interstate
relations. Democracies are more likely to engage in international trade and investment
resulting in peace as conflict will be less likely.

1.2 Libertarianism is a political philosophy that affirms the rights of individuals to
liberty, to acquire, keep, and exchange their holdings, and considers the protection of

victims of aggression by others, against their persons or their property. Libertarians
believe that all individuals are entitled to live as they choose freely and without any
interference from other persons or by the state.
