This businesscase is written by three fourth year students:
Jelle Hoekstra, Logistics management student
Sophie Hoffman, Martime officer student
Kane van Dijk, Logistics engineering student
This business case is written as an assignment for the course RMIMP09, Business
development for sustainable hinterland transport. Within this course the three students
have prepared a business case, which will be executed in this document.
The timeframe for this research is 6 weeks. The basis of this report was made on the 3 de of
December and the final adjustments were made on ..th of January. This Business case is
aimed at the DB Schenker management.

1.Introduction
1.1 The background
The background of the exercise is the constant demand for a sustainable and innovative
hinterland in the Netherlands. The Netherlands tries to reach the targets for emission
reduction. This means the whole country needs to try to reduce the emission to prevent
further global warming and the transport sector has a big bite in the cherry of the total
emissions. This is the reason why the transport sector keeps innovating to get the most
efficient and sustainable (hinterland) transport.
For this report, a company that operates in the hinterland must be chosen, to make this
report for. The chosen company is DB Schenker. In the following paragraph, a company
description will be given.

1.2 About the company
DB Schenker is founded in 1872 in Vienna, Austria. DB Schenker started with rail transport
from Paris to Vienna. After world war one DB Schenker focussed on express service, regional
forwarding, removals and congresses. In 1922 DB Schenker sends its first air transport and in
1931 the first sea freight is sent out by container. DB Schenker continues growing and
