, Lecture 1: Europe’s ideas, ideals and identities

1. The identities of Europe

A geographical entity: Does Europe has borders? If yes, where does it end. Are there ethnic or religion
borders?

• The geographical, political and ethnic borders of Europe are debatable. To the south,
west and north they are marked by coastlines, but there is no clear border to the east.

• Is Russia part of Europe? Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia? Israel?

A cultural entity: There are many cultures, states, nationalities, languages and dialects. Europe is
divived into all of this.

• If the external limits of Europe are contested, so is its internal identity (how
Europeans define themselves relative to others).
• Nations offer Europeans the most obvious reminder of their differences, with
language, culture, history and symbols preventing a broader sense of European
identity.
• Europe is divided:

• at least 40 different states
• 160 different nationalities
• natives of the EU speaking more than 40 different languages, of which 23 are
currently recognized as official

A polity (political entity):

• Whilst cultural allegiance is often linked to nations, most Europeans owe their legal
allegiance to states through citizenship and the corresponding rights and duties.

• Although the EU has promoted an EU citizenship (giving EU citizens the right to live in
different EU states and to vote in local and European Parliament elections, for
example), this is not the same as providing Europeans with the same rights and legal
status as those who are citizens of a member state.

European citizenship does not (yet?) replace national citizenship

, 2. The ideals of Europe

The ideal of europe - The three p’s:

Peace → Europe was build on peace, after the world wars

Prosperity→ In the 70’s it was build on prosperity because europe was growing and europe’s poor
countries were growing. They brought prosperity to the eastern european countries.

Power→ It was build on power because power is always around. It is needed, especially on the
international scale and in relation to great powers like the USA, Russia, China etc.

3. Conclusions:

• There is not one European Identity, but there are Europeans, there are European
identifications (from football, music, to hymns, currencies, and flags).

• Europe is a geographical entity, and it is a cultural sphere. Above all, it is some kind of political
system (but what kind of? → This course)

• European ideals: Peace, Prosperity and…

• Power?

• Recent developments: from rules and regulations to events

• Is europe an identity? No
• Is europe a geographical entity? Yes but there are no clear borders.
• Is europe one culture? No, Definetely not
• Is europe a language? Nope
• Is europe a polity(staatsbestel) → de wijze waarop het bestuur van een staat is georganiseerd?
