600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
Please write the essay under the four headings given.
• The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
Authentic materials are defined by The TEFL Academy (2021) as materials that are either written
or spoken texts not meant for language teaching purposes. I found, through the utilization of
authentic travel material, that the topic added authenticity in the way the English language is
presented to the reader. The travel text contains genuine examples of colloquial and everyday
language used by native English speaker. These materials, unlike course books, also encourage a
development of a more extensive language base due to its authenticity. Students, no matter what
age, learn better when something is interesting or relative to their own personal lives. Travelling is
a common habit of people of various ages. Therefore, my chosen authentic text provides students
something they enjoy, can relate to and can find common ground on despite their cultural and
background differences.
• Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
As mentioned in the paragraph above, the students are comprised of mixed nationalities,
backgrounds, and purpose for coming to the UK. In order to bring the group together and find
common ground, understanding and interest, the topic of “Travel” has been chosen for that
specific purpose. Moreover, it is a highly interesting and energizing topic because it gets the
majority of people excited. It prompts the imagination, adventure and discovery, creativity, health
and mindfulness, as well as advancement of the world we live in. A large number of these students
already have experienced travel either short-term or long-term, and will be confident and
comfortable enough to discuss this topic because of their understanding.
The chosen vocabulary items are mostly related to the topic of “Travel” such as heading (to),
jargon, empathy, perspective, resourceful, etc. Besides their relativity to the text, they have also
been chosen based on their difficulty level.
• Why my activities are appropriate for this class:
With the help of globalization, traveling and the internet, we are continuously exposed to a
multicultural world. It is significant due to the various educational experiences traveling provides
