Effective communicationScenario
Oakland is a residential care and nursing home for the elderly , effective communication ,
both between service providers and between service providers and service users , is vital to
ensure that the home runs smoothly ; that the residents are aware of what is happening with
their daily care and activities ; and that everyone feels happy and safe. As the residents are
older , they tend to have a more formal approach to communication and personal interaction.

Scenario 1: Iris has dementia, which affects her understanding and short term memory.
Noise and proximity are two environmental factors which could prevent Iris from receiving
effective communication. By this, Iris wouldn’t be able to remember something if there are a
wide range of people as it would be harder for her to concentrate as she has dementia.
Dementia would make it harder for her to concentrate as she can’t find her words. For
example if Iris tries to communicate with the service provider she may become distracted
due to service users in the residential care home walking around near her area where she is
seated. The service provider may sit down further away from Iris which makes it harder to
communicate as they can’t see each other’s facial expression or body language which is a
negative effect as the communication is not effective. However, Proximity could have it’s
own benefits. For example the service provider may sit closer to Iris which then enables Iris
to communicate more effectively as she can see the one she is communicating with.
However, noise could prevent Iris from receiving effective communication. Due to Iris her
dementia it would be harder for her to concentrate but it would be more difficult if there is
noise around her area where she is seated. For example if other service users are talking
around her she won’t be able to concentrate as she can not focus what she wants to say
which is ineffective communication. A positive effect on the environmental factor noise could
be a quiet room which could benefit Iris by being able to communicate effective as she can
express herself. Thereby, she is able to focus more.

Four ways to overcome dementia could be pace, pitch & tone, effective eye contact, age
appropriate language, reminiscence therapy and personal space. A verbal way of
communication used with people who have dementia could be pace, pitch & tone. The
service provider may use a calm and slow voice with a differ tone. By this, it could convey a
friendly message to Iris. This is important as people like Iris struggle to process information.
By talking slowly, clearing and using short sentences the service provider enables Iris to
process the information. By this, Iris is more likely to respond back. It is also important to
pause while speaking out one sentence. Due to Iris her dementia she is not able to process
a lot of information at once which won’t enable her to remember everything. By this, as we
pause after each sentence it will be easier for Iris to remember what the service provider
said. Therefore, communication was carried out effectively. NHS (2017)
, A nonverbal way of communication which could be beneficial to individuals with dementia
could be eye contact. Eye contact is important as it shows that an service provider is
listening to Iris. By this, Iris feels respected. Eye contact does not only convey respect but
also shows interest. As it already was mentioned eye contact gives the influence that the
service provider is listening to Iris. By this, Iris will feel valued by the service provider and will
be more likely to communicate effectively. The eye contact conveys how an individual feels.
For example if Iris her eyes are widen it could be due to a positive feeling such as
excitement or happiness. Eye contact keeps a conversation ongoing as it shows that an

Another way of verbal communication which is used effectively with individuals who suffer
from dementia is age appropriate language. Thereby, the service provider cannot use any
jargon whilst being near Iris as it could confuse Iris. By this, Iris would not be able to
understand what the service provider is saying which then causes a barrier. However, to
overcome this is to use age appropriate language such as formal language. As Iris has
dementia it is much harder for her to process long sentences as she cannot focus.
Therefore, will not be able to remember it. By this, the service provider may break down
sentences but should not communicate with her like she would with a child. By this, Iris could
feel belittled and offended which could make her upset and therefore would not be able to
communicate effectively.
A nonverbal way of communication could be personal space. By this, the service provider
may be too close to Iris which could made her feel intimidated by her. Therefore, Iris
wouldn’t be able to communicate effective as she may fear the service provider. However,
this barrier could be avoided as the service provider has personal space. For example
standing a bit further away which would make Iris feel more comfortable. By this, she would
be more likely to focus and communicate with the service provider. However, the service
provider could pat or hold Iris hand which could convey a message of kindness and
reassurance. By this, Iris would feel valued by the service provider but the service provider
must look at Iris her body language and see whether Iris is comfortable with it.
Reminiscence therapy would be beneficial to Iris as it is a activity that discusses about her
life. An example of that could be showing Iris pictures of when she was younger which then
helps her with her cognitive ability. By this, she would be able to memorize everything about
her past and talk effectively about it. For example what the smell of the perfume was like
back in her years or how she used to dress. They could even remember who they liked or
disliked by just seeing a picture of their early age. Thereby, Iris would be able to memorize it
throughout the reminiscence therapy and be able to communicate effectively with the service
provider. The objects the reminiscence therapy uses is photographs or music.

The effectiveness of reminiscence therapy is that it improves the cognitive ability of
individuals with the Alzheimer disease. Therefore, it enables them to communicate
effectively with the service provider or with their family members. The service users can
exchange memories such as what they would wear in their early years. This improves their
self-image and creates a emotion of intimacy as it gives a special meaning to interact time
