WHY WAS AMERICA A SUPERPOWER?
America was known as leader of the

working class. This provided reassurance for the USSR.

Democracy. Dictatorship.
Emphasis on private ownership. Emphasis on sharing wealth.
Freedom to make money. Community is more important than
the individual.
Some are poor, some are rich. People should work to help collective
community.
KEY EVENTS BEFORE 1939:
Bolsheviks seize power in the October revolution of 1917.
USSR under Lenin develops a communist economy and Comintern is
established to promote the system.
WORLD WAR TWO:
Nazi-Soviet pact of 1939.
June 1941- Nazi Germany launches Operation Barbarossa and invades
USSR.
December 1941- Japanese attack US naval base (Pearl Harbour).
1945- US drop the first ever nuclear weapon on Japan to end World War
Two.
USSR started to build bombs however, they didn’t drop them.
‘Arms race’ was used to intimidate.
Why weren’t the USA and USSR friends?
Their ideas were just too different, making them polar opposites.
They were also fighting to be the biggest superpower.
