Question 1

a) How Technology Has Been an Important Factor in The Provision of Services to Society.

Mickeel Allen (2019) refers to Technology as methods, systems, and devices which are the result of
scientific knowledge being used for practical purposes of enhancing the lives of a society

Technology affects the way individuals communicate, learn, and think. It helps society and determines
how people interact with each other daily. Technology plays an important role in society today. It has
positive and negative effects on the world, and it impacts daily lives. We are living in an era where
technological advances are common. The internet and cell phones are some examples. However, with
technological advances, there’s a downside to it all.

One aspect of technology that has had a great impact on society is how it affects learning. It’s made
learning more interactive and collaborative, this helps people better engage with the material that
they are learning and have trouble with. Also, it gets you better access to resources. With the creation
of the internet, it gives us access to information at a twenty-four-hour rate and you have access to
almost anything online. In addition, it allows students to get work done easier. Students can take
quizzes and exams more easily, and teachers being able to hold online classes can be very effective. It
also expands the boundaries of the classroom, encouraging self-paced learning. People can access
learning through YouTube and social media. This helps students learn better than sitting down for
lectures and reading from textbooks. These technological advancements made learning more fun and
convenient.

Technology has now more than ever impacted society is through communication. How we talk and
communicate with one another worldwide especially during the worldwide lockdown Covid-19 period.
Technology allowed people from all over the world to share their Covid 19 experiences, natural
remedies and other methods of dealing with the virus. Technology also brought a way of passing time
in households and minimising boredom. While most people were forced to isolate themselves from
society. Social media was one of the ways people from all over the way could interact and entertain
one another. Certain organisation introduced a virtual method of conducting business from the
comfort of employee’s home. This meant people were still able to continue with their work during the
lockdown thus less reduction in economic activities. Although many other industries were affected
technology ensured a certain part of society kept their jobs

Lastly, the technological advancements that were made within the health industry have helped keep
people safe, healthy and informed with the current statistics of global infections and recovery rates.
In South Africa the Department of Health was giving out daily updates which kept the general public
informed and also ensured awareness. People went as far as taking their general health more serious
by downloading innovative apps on phones that allowed people to watch their weight, how many
calories they intake, heart rate and other health properties any time of the day. There’s increased
accessibility of treatment available, there’s the change in healthcare that adds benefits for the elderly,
and hospitals using advanced technology within their surgical rooms.

, Technological development causes society’s needs to change continuously because information gets
updated almost instantaneously. Technology has become more sophisticated and in order to meet
the expectations of societies, authorities are compelled to remain at the forefront of technology
themselves. Only in this way will authorities be able to understand adequately the way in which
societal needs are affected by new technologies.

b) How the restrictions on movement have affected citizen access to services, including effects on
urbanisation.

Urbanisation takes place when the population of the world or of a country moves or migrates from
rural areas to urban areas (cities). Due to urbanisation, societies have started to age because fewer
children are being born and adults live longer because of good medical care. Urbanisation leads to a
greater demand for public services within a small area.

In addition, urbanisation has many adverse effects on the structure of society as gigantic
concentrations of people compete for limited resources. Increased housing construction leads to
overcrowding and slums or squatter camps, which experience major problems such as poverty, poor
sanitation, unemployment and high crime rates.

The National Lockdown has put a greater strain on society and its needs. It led to more people
competing for a limited amount of resources due to the lack of movement enforced by the
government.

The result of urbanisation has been that societies in urban areas have greater

needs for

• Access to healthcare services including Covid 19 and all other existing viruses and diseases the
country has been facing.
• Welfare services this includes the increase in social grants, the addition of an unemployment
grants and the delivery of food parcels to household and communities in need
• Availability of drinking water and sanitation. More than ever water has been one of the leading
factors in fighting of Covid 19. Washing of hands has been one of the ways to fight and reduce
Covid 19
• Overcrowding and the restriction of movement may soon deplete the available drinking water
and not assist in the social distancing method
• Educational services were restricted as more and more schools were closed and affected
during the national lockdown
• Employment opportunities and loss of jobs were affected
• Transport facilities were put under pressure and social distancing regulation conditions put
and even higher burden on accommodating the needs of the greater society.

Urbanisation has in conclusion lead to the increased demanding on the healthcare, social and
economic services of a country. The government or state are now having to formulate new innovative
ways of providing for its people by taking into account the current global epidemic.
