Biological Treatment for OCDDrug Therapy
This is the most commonly used biological therapy for anxiety disorders.
The therapy assumes that there is a chemical imbalance in the brain.
The imbalance can be corrected by drugs, which can increase or decrease
the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI)
This is the standard medical treatment used to lessen the symptoms of
OCD.
SSRIs attempt to increase the serotonin levels in the brain by stopping it
from being re-absorbed.
By doing so, SSRIs increase its levels in the synapse and therefore
continue to stimulate the post-synaptic neurone.
Combining SSRIs with Other Treatments
Drugs tend to be used with Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
The drugs reduce the emotional symptoms that one has, such as the
anxiety and depression they may experience.
This means that the patient can then engage more in CBT.
