Comparing and Contrasting Dark and Light Leaders
According to Johnson (2018), “For most of us, leadership has a positive connotation.
Ethical leaders brighten the lives of those around them significantly by building trust
commitment, and satisfaction: by reducing negative behavior; and by increasing individual and
collective performance” (Ch.1). This is considered the light side or ethical part of leadership
that, unfortunately, there is also a dark side. The dark side or unethical part of leadership,
according to Kellerman (2004), "bad leaders can be ineffective, unethical, or ineffective and
unethical." Leaders will display different traits that can be light or dark, ethical or unethical,
moral and immoral, both destructive and non-destructive. You must have a good understanding
of both sides if you want to have an understanding of leadership as a whole and be able to tell
what type of leader you are dealing with. A dark leader must change their dark traits into a light
style of leadership, so their behaviors are not destructive. Comparing two important leaders from
history, one light, and one dark, looking at the leadership styles, how they demonstrate that style
and the effects they had on the organizations they led, will help further understand leadership.
Dark (unethical) vs. Light (ethical) A Brief Biography
A prominent dark (unethical) leader from history is Adolf Hitler. “Adolf Hitler was
chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945, serving as dictator and leader of the Nazi Party, or
National Socialist German Workers Party, for the bulk of his time in power” (Adolf Hitler
Biography, 2020 para.2). His fascist policies led to the genocide, also known as the
HolocaustHolocaust, which resulted in millions of Jews being murdered. He created the position
of Fuhrer "in August 1934, shortly after the death of Pres. Paul von Hindenburg, the German
people, voted to give Hitler complete authority, combining the offices of chancellor and
President to create the post of "Führer und Reichskanzler” (“Leader and Chancellor”)”
