, What is the auteur theory, you might ask? Is this a simple concept? This term’s
translation is “author,” which comes from the French word “auteur.” In the world of film, the
auteur theory says the director is the primary creative source. US film critic Andrew Sarris reads:
“The strong director imposes his personality on a film; the weak director allows the personalities
of others to run rampant.” This theory came to be in 1954 by a French film director named
Francois Truffaut. The auteur theory comes alive during the French New Wave movement in
cinema.
Initially, many agreed with the basic idea of the theory: the director is responsible for the
film. Did you know that a similar theory movement was used in Germany? Some thought that
the scriptwriter was the primary creative source of the film. However, many have questioned the
theory because of many people being involved in the film’s development. This is one of the
main objections to auteur theory. In the end, a film will have a writer alongside the director,
which makes it challenging to put all of the weight just on the director.
Steven Spielberg’s work makes him a distant father to all film-makers. The best-known
of these film-makers who were influenced by Spielberg, in my opinion, would be Tim Burton.
Tim Burton grew up in Burbank, California, and refers to it as the “pit of hell.” He felt
misunderstood and isolated. After making films for twenty-five plus years, Tim Burton certainly
warrants auteur status. His films are easily recognizable to audiences all over the world. Many
of the features of his films that we know well are unique to his style of filmmaking. As I read
about Burton, I learned that his type of style in movies is called “gothic suburbia.” This means he
