Florence Nightingale is a name that echoes the hall of academia and through the voices of
people when they are referring to women pioneers. Her contributions to nurses and healthcare
can be seen today. Coined as the “Lady with the Lamp” Florence could be seen among the
wailing of twisted and warped men. Their screams and calls for help only soothed by the care
and consideration from Florence. Called to war she showed tremendous insight and theological
emphasis on care.
Born to a family of wealth in May 12, 1820 her life according to her parents was carved
in stone. Born in an elite family her role was to be among other prominent daughters, Florence of
course had other plans, she rebelled upon her parent’s wishes, “After telling her parents that she
intended to become a nurse, that it was her destiny to become a nurse in order to serve others'
health needs, they were "horrified". . . …reluctantly allowed her to leave home for training at the
Institution for Deaconesses at Kaiserwerth in Germany"(Garofalo, et al., 2010).
Her reluctant behavior is only partially the reason why Florence Nightingale us revered
as a pioneer for women, nurses, and public health. Her intervention in the previously stated fields
propelled Florence to the forefront. Initially she is revered as a woman who was not shackled by
the constraints of gender and social roles. Where she truly shined was her contribution to nursing
and healthcare. During the Crimean War, “war fought mainly on the Crimean Peninsula between
the Russians and the British, French, and Ottoman Turkish, with support from January 1855 by
the army of Sardinia-Piedmont. The war arose from the conflict of great powers in the Middle
East and was more directly caused by Russian demands to exercise protection over the Orthodox
subjects of the Ottoman sultan” (BritanicaEncyclopaedia. 2020). She was charged to organize 38
nurses to attend to the medical needs of wounded at the military hospital in Scutari, Turkey.Here
