Welcome to this new learning opportunity which is a very important steppingstone on your
career path. For many of you, enrolling for work-integrated learning (WIL), in-service
training or workplace learning) will be the first opportunity to enter your chosen career. By
making WIL a compulsory part of your course, I hope to help you overcome the first hurdle
in finding a job.
WIL is a compulsory module of your certificate which introduces you to the real work
situation as a veterinary welfare assistant.
It is therefore extremely important that you make sure that you gain the best possible
experience in industry and meet all the requirements, stated in this tutorial letter, meticulously.
The WIL coordinator for animal welfare will do the following:
• Provide academic guidance or answer specific questions on the WIL guide or specific
projects.
• Assist you as far as possible to find placement opportunities for WIL.
• Assist you in developing your portfolio.
• Assist in maintaining the cooperative education data on our computer database (marks
received for projects, receipt of logbook, etc).
• Provide you with a letter to the employer to confirm that you are enrolled for WIL at
Unisa and need industry placement.
Tutorial Letter 101 contains important information about the scheme of work, resources and
assignments for this module. I urge you to read it carefully and to keep it at hand when
working through the study material; working on your logbook; preparing your portfolio and
addressing questions to your lecturers.
Tutorial Letter 101 contains the registration forms (VWA forms), criteria for assessment as
well as instructions on preparing and submitting the portfolio. It also provides all the
information you need on additional resources and how to obtain them. I have also included
certain general and administrative information about this module. Please study this section
of the tutorial letter carefully.
It is very important that you read all the tutorial letters you will receive during the year
immediately and carefully, since they always contain important and, sometimes, urgent
information.
Also remember to make use of myUnisa to communicate with your lecturer and
fellow students.
