a general definition of what health is, the term “health” can have different components or

meanings based on an individual’s experiences. For instance, a young adult’s personal definition

of health may mean they have not seen a doctor recently whereas an older person with a chronic

disease may define health as not having been admitted to a hospital recently. America is facing a

health care crisis due to an aging population and insufficient resources to meet future demands of

health care needs [CITATION Kni02 \l 1033 ]. It is expected that by 2030 there will be

approximately 61 million people aged 66 to 84 years old and an additional 9 million people over

age 85 years. The economic burden of providing care to these individuals is likely to be

staggering if steps are not taking soon to improve the health of these individuals with a focus on

keeping them out of long-term care as long as possible[CITATION Kni02 \l 1033 ]. In order to

improve the health of these individuals, it is necessary to build a culture of health whose goal is

to promote increased health across all generations and populations. A culture of health starts at

an individual level. In order to improve the health of Americans, each person needs to focus on

key health behaviors including tobacco use, exercise, and diet as ways to improve their own

health.

Tobacco use, which includes smoking, smokeless tobacco products, and e-cigarettes, is

the largest cause of preventable death in America [CITATION Bes18 \l 1033 ] and as such its

, use needs to be eliminated. Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases,

diabetes,

and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and leads to over 480,000 United States deaths each

year with an additional 16 million Americans living with a smoking related

disease[CITATION Cen18 \l 1033 ]. The economic impact of tobacco use has a significant

negative impact on

America’s healthcare system which needs to be addressed. It is estimated to cost this nation

approximately $170 billion to treat tobacco-related illnesses and an additional $156 billion in lost

productivity each year[CITATION Exp18 \l 1033 ]. Since 1972, the Robert Wood Johnson

Foundation (RWJF) has been tireless working to regulate tobacco use to improve the overall

health of Americans [CITATION Bes18 \l 1033 ]. Some efforts to deter people from smoking

include imposing higher excise taxes on tobacco products, implementing smoke-free indoor air

laws, increasing access to cessation treatments, and federally regulating tobacco [CITATION

Bes18 \l 1033 ]. While researchers believe that these efforts have saved the lives of about 8

million Americans [CITATION Exp18 \l 1033 ] more still needs to be done. For instance,

menthol, which has been found to increase youth initiation of tobacco use, should be banned

[CITATION Bes18 \l 1033 ]. Additionally, the use of flavors in all combusted and smokeless

tobacco products should also be banned [CITATION Bes18 \l 1033 ]. Those who currently

smoke should be encouraged to participate in a cessation program. By adopting and

implementing tobacco control policies, it will be possible to motivate current users to quit and

help prevent youth to not start. The elimination of tobacco use will improve the quality of health

for all people[CITATION Exp18 \l 1033 ] thereby relieving some of the stress on the healthcare

system.
