❖ Why is Betamethasone used in preterm labor?


- In pre-term labor: baby does not have the surfactant ability to breathe
independently without struggling.
- May need O2 assistance or mechanical intervention


❖ Treatment for hyperemesis (excessive vomiting)


- * IV fluids, Zofran IV, IV fluid with vitamins
- Electrolytes impaired due to excessive vomiting in pregnancy
- Not necessarily through the whole pregnancy

❖ Polyhydramnios


- medical condition describing an excess of amniotic fluid in the amniotic sac.
It is seen in about 1% of pregnancies. It is typically diagnosed when the

❖ Urinary effects of pregnancy

, - Urine output increases because of pressure of uterus on bladder in 3rd
trimester
- Increased filtration rate
- Retaining more Na = retain more fluid due to increased volume

- Reflux

❖ Preeclampsia


- everything is shutting down (not just HTN)
- No perfusion to mom's organs (DANGEROUS SITUATION!!!)
- Brain, heart, lungs, kidneys and liver are affected.
- Sudden rise in BP can cause placental abruption
- We must try to get everything to settle down and open blood vessels
