four pair of extrinsic tongue muscles.One is the chin
born and this is called Genioglossus.Genio refers to
chin and glossus refers to the tongue. When this
muscle contracts it will protrude the tongue help to stick
our tongue. The next one is Hyoglossus Muscle
because It is coming off the little high bone.This will
bring the tongue back in or retract it. The other two
muscles are called palatoglossus and
styloglossus.So what about role in the tongue and
changing the shape of the tongue. It is done by the
intrinsic tongue muscles. Those intrinsic tongue
muscles originate and stay in the tongue. they don't
attach to any of the bones outside so pretty much make
up the meat of the tongue.
There are actually for different types of intrinsic
muscles and their names based upon the direction in
which the muscle fibers ko aur what we would call it
fiber orientation.There is superior and inferior
longitudinal fibers which cause the length of the tongue
optical fibers will go up and down in transverse fibers
