, -Jacob did not have the right connections nor the preferred conservative political view so he
could not receive a promotion (ebook, location 414). Due to this, both resigned their posts and
became professors and worked in the library.
-When Wilhelm married, his wife, Dortchen Wild, looked after the household for both brothers.
Even tho the two had children, he was dedicated to his work. The brothers liked a quiet
atmosphere and set up a strict schedule at home.
-They did receive money and support from friends and admirers for their stance on academic
freedom (and they were in a bad financial state) but the monarchs ruling at the time prevented
them from teaching.
5. What are the three major myths that Zipes dispels about the Grimms and their collection?
-One major myth is that the brothers did not collect their story from peasants in the countryside
but from storytellers they would invite who would repeat the tales aloud. Most storytellers were
educated young women from the middle or upper class.
-A second major myth is that the brothers did not agree on how they edited tales. Jacob set the
tone of the fairy tales and the brothers were both in agreement about how they wanted to change
and style the fairytales (location 489).
-A third major myth is that they were not the founders of fairytales, wasn’t even their project
originally to publish the tales and they did not intend to be literary historians
6. In what ways did they change the tales and why?
-Wilhelm paid more attention to the style and the content to appeal to children or for adults who
wanted censored tales for children after 1815. For children to learn.
-Originally, they created literary fairytales that were close to oral tradition while incorporating
stylistic, formal, and substantial thematic changes to appeal the growing middle class (when they
published in 1812 and 1815). It was to serve a reminder of the German culture. They got rid of
the erotic and sexual elements since it would offend middle class morality and added Christian
references.
-More direct dialogue
-After 1819, Wilhelm tried to keep what they had done before but made the tales more proper
and sensible for the bourgeois (location 510).
7. Who was the intended audience? Are there only magical tales in the collection? How and
when did their collection become popular?
-Originally for children, and then for middle class and then for the bourgeois.
-There are not only magical tales but unusual fables, legends, anecdotes, jokes, and religious
tales.
