, 1. Explain why “the colonial government in Haiti introduced apartheid style
legislation which discriminated against free coloured and black people in
order to keep them in their place”.

a. Was this a justified move? Briefly explain your stance.

The colonial government in Haiti introduced apartheid-style legislation which
discriminated against free coloured and black people in order to maintain their
dominance and control over the society. The French colonial rulers of Haiti enacted a
complex system of racial classification that divided the population into white, free
coloured, and black categories. The free coloured were considered a threat to white
supremacy, as they were often educated and wealthy, and they represented a
potential challenge to the colonial government's authority. In response, the colonial
government implemented laws and policies that restricted the social and economic
mobility of the free coloured and black populations, effectively enforcing a system of
apartheid.

It is not justified to discriminate against any group of people based on their race or
ethnicity. The colonial government's apartheid-style legislation was an unjust and
oppressive system that deprived the free coloured and black people of their
fundamental human rights, including the right to education, employment, and political
representation. The discrimination perpetuated by this legislation is a violation of
basic human dignity and equality. Therefore, this move cannot be justified, and it
highlights the historical and ongoing injustices faced by marginalized communities
around the world.

Africans and their descendants fought against the French colonial rulers and their
allies. The events in Haiti showed that the Europeans were not necessarily prepared
to extend the new ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity to non-white people,
despite the fact that these ideals were enshrined in the French Revolution. The
European powers, including France, were not prepared to accept the idea of a black
