, Purpose

The purpose of this experiment is to teach students the chemical and physical
properties of Acetylsalicylic Acid. This experiment will demonstrate to students on
how to perform the synthesis of the acid to or also known as Aspirin. The students
will synthesize the salicylic acid with acetic anhydride that will react to form
Acetylsalicylic Acid.

Acetylsalicylic acid is a synthetic compound made by acetylating salicylic acid,
which is derived from willow tree bark. Aspirin is a white crystalline powder that is
soluble in water and organic solvents. It has analgesic (pain-relieving), anti-
inflammatory, and antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties, and it is used to treat a
variety of conditions. (I)

The experiment will also introduce to the students on how to do a product testing,
where the students need to perform odor testing, Aging of ASA, and Phenol test to
determine the presence of salicylic acid in the sample.
