As a business analyst for ABC Company, I was asked to complete a consulting report on

the difference between strategic and operational strategies. Throughout this report I will focus on

a case study that was completed by John Wiley and Sons on Trader Joe’s called Keeping a Cool

Edge. Throughout the report, I will site difference that Trader Joe’s uses to separate its strategic

and operational thinking. Plus, I will complete a SWOT report based on the case study. The

overall purpose of this report to show how ABC Company can use strategic and operational

strategies to improve and achieve ABC Company’s goals. Plus, how to complete a SWOT report

to put on focus on areas of improvement or strengths.

Strategic Thinking versus Operational Thinking

First, we must define and establish the difference of strategic and operational thinking.

To achieve your overall outcome, you must think strategically and operationally but you must do

so in the correct order to achieve the desired outcome. As strategic thinking is comprehensive

planning to guide resource allocations to achieve a long-term organizational goal (Schermerhorn

and Bachrach, 2020, p.194). Along with strategic thinking, you have strategic intent that focuses

and applies organizational energies on a unifying and compelling goals (Schermerhorn and

Bachrach, 2020, p.194). Operational thinking is different from strategic thinking because

operational thinking uses specific results that organizations try to accomplish through direct

activities toward key performance areas (Schermerhorn and Bachrach, 2020, p198).
