The effects of the Deaths of the Duke of Alencon and William of Orange and the Treaties of
Joinville and Nonsuch on England and the International Situation

The Duke of Alencon and William of Orange:

- The death of the Duke of Alencon meant that he was no longer able to fight against Spain in
the Netherlands, which meant that there was a greater chance of Spain defeating the Dutch
which would then endanger Elizabeth

- His death also led to a religious war in France because the next heir to France was a
Protestant

- This then meant that there was no chance of France being a useful ally to England

- The death of William of Orange left the Dutch Protestants without a leader, so they turned
to Elizabeth as their next leader

- Being the figurehead of a rebellion against Spain would not have been good for Elizabeth
and would have strained England's relationship with Spain even further

- The loss of a leader for the rebellion meant that Spain was able to defeat the rebels, leaving
England vulnerable with all of Spain's focus now on Elizabeth.

The Treaties of Joinville and Nonsuch:

- The Treaty of Joinville aligned France and Spain's interests against the French Protestants

- This was bad for Elizabeth because France and Spain were now allies of one another and
Spain and England were hostile

- Elizabeth then signed the Treaty of Nonsuch in the Summer of 1585

- That treaty meant that England and Spain were essentially at war with each other because
Elizabeth was now directly interfering in the Netherlands on the side of the rebels.
