FPSY-8135: Criminal Behavior

Psychopathy in the Movies

In 1991, Anthony Hopkins stars in Silence of the Lamb. The psychological horror the

silence of the lamb (Demme 1991) depicts Hopkins as a murderous cannibalistic serial killer

named Dr. Hannibal Lector. Deciphering Dr. Lector’s characteristics that could be considered

criminal rest on the idea that silence of the lamb had been filmed inside of a criminal institution

where Dr. Lector uses manipulation, charm, intelligence, absence of nervousness, coldblooded

aggressiveness, relentless persistence, and other psychopathic characteristics to capture the

attention of an FBI trainee Clarice Starling. Dr. Lector demonstrates the slightest remorse of

guilt for his victims, as evidenced in his first meeting with Clarice, Dr. Lector brags about eating

another individual kidney over fava beans. Although betrayed as an intelligent person, Dr. Lector

satisfies his own personal needs by enticing Clarice with stories on his ability to savagely murder

and eat others therefore betraying a multitude of criminal behaviors (Demme 1991).

Dr. Lector is portrayed as a psychiatrist who demonstrated psychopathic traits to lure in

his victims before murdering them. Through the utilization of Cleckley-Hare diagnostic criteria

for Psychopathy (PCL-R) and Hares Psychopathy Checklist (PCL-22) Dr. Lector meets 17 of 22

variables present for the (PCL-22) 8 of 8 for (PCL-R) Factor 1: aggressive narcissism, and 7of

10 for (PCL-R) Factor 2; socially deviant lifestyle. Using a 2-point scale for both (PCL-22) and

(PCL-R) factor 1 and factor 2 Dr. Lector meets the criteria on all three scales for psychopathy

(Miller 2012). Variables consist of superficial charm, grandiose, low frustration tolerance,

pathological lying, conning, lack of remorse or guilt, lack of emotional depth, poor behavioral
