"Harry Potter and the Unknown
Girl He Saved"
Western Governors University
As early as I can remember, I was considered the “dumb kid.” I was in special education
classes and had to have help with reading, writing, and speaking. I was extremely sensitive to
the situation I was in and couldn’t see a way out. It wasn’t that I had a difficult time
understanding material, it was that I could not process what I was reading. I couldn't match
sounds to letters, or spell them. I have few fond memories of my early education beyond recess,
P.E., and art class. I can remember getting sweaty hands, my heart racing, and my mouth
getting dry when getting called on for reading a sentence or doing a math problem. I retreated
more and more into myself trying to make myself smaller so I wouldn’t be called on. All of
this started to turn around for the better about the time I reached middle school. A book series
called “Harry Potter” was about to change my life forever.
Most children find middle school a trying time and it was especially hard for me as I
was behind academically. I lived in a small town where everyone knew everyone's business. It
felt like parents and kids alike were staring and whispering about me. At a time when
children are going through huge changes already, I was depressed and felt awful and useless.
I was in the 7th grade when I took that fateful trip to my middle school library with my class to
pick out some books. I dreaded these trips because I was uncomfortable even being around so
many books that I could not read as proficiently as I should have been able to. My depression
and anxiety over my illiteracy had become a part of my self-identity.
