Selected Theorist: Karen Horney
Evaluation of Research Sources
For the final project, Karen Horney's theory on Neurosis was chosen as the topic to be
evaluated. The majority of the key references used in the final project were found using the
Shapiro Library, Google Scholar, and Google Search. The importance of primary sources is
that they provide a firsthand account of the theorist's research. The references identified to meet
the evaluation criteria because they are relevant to the discussion, are works by the theorist and
are either primary or secondary sources of pertinent content contributing to a primary source.
Historical Context
Karen Horney, a Neo-Freudian and German psychoanalyst, is credited with founding
feminist psychology in response to Freud's penis envy theory (McCarthy, 2014). She also
contributed to neurosis theory, which varied from other psychoanalysts in the early 1900s and is
still commonly used today (Horney, 1937). Horney was a Neo-Freudian who believed in many of
Sigmund Freud's fundamental ideas, including the Id, ego, and superego, and the idea that the
personality is formed during infancy (Horney, 1937). Horney, however, disagrees with Freud in
terms of his theory on a child's personality. Sigmund Freud argued that sexual experiences
shaped a child's personality, while Horney (1937) suggested that social tensions were significant
in forming a child's personality. Horney demonstrated that women were capable of doing
research and contributing to the psychology community when there were few women in the field
(McCarthy, 2014).
Research Method
Horney (1937) coined the term "neurosis" to describe her experiences as a
psychotherapist. To better understand their clients' desires, psychotherapists use one or more
of the following theories:
