There are a variety of ethical theories within health and social care, each of which primarily focus on
theoretical ways of telling right from wrong (morals) as well as they create guidelines about how we should act
and live ethically ensuring behaviour is not considered deviant. These ethical theories or principles include
consequentialism, deontology, principlism as well as virtue ethics. They can be used in life when service
users or professionals are faced with a difficult situation.
Consequentialism can be incorporated into the care of Brenda as it means that all decisions are made by
taking into account the outcomes to each decision. For example, sending Brenda to sheltered
accommodation would benefit her in the long-term as it means her mental health is prioritised whilst also
receiving treatment and support for her asthma.
Deontology can be incorporated into the care of Nusrat as it states that professionals should follow legal
obligations within health care which helps to provide fair and quality treatment, even if the choices conflict
against service users. For example, a professional from the local drama centre may know that Nusrat is

not taking her epilepsy medication and therefore report this. Although this may not be what Nusrat want it
is the ethical thing to do so that Nusrat’s health and wellbeing does not decline.
Principlism can be incorporated into the care of all service users as it brings together many theories to
individualise care to match with a person’s social, religious and individual beliefs. This can therefore
empower all service users as it ensures that their beliefs are being heard and that they have an active
influence on their support and health care needs.
Virtue ethics can be incorporated into the care of Martin as it ensures that all decisions are based on each
individual’s morals and how they feel. This includes doctors taking into account that Martin feels self-
conscious about his skin condition therefore providing advice and treatment to help him feel more
confident as opposed to just treating it. For example, the doctors may discuss issues specific to Martin to
make him feel more comfortable.
In addition to this, ethical principles can be incorporated into the care of service user to overcome conflicts of
interest as well as to help balance resources between service users like Martin, Nusrat and Brenda.
A conflict of interest could rise for Brenda, as she has previously stated that she wants to keep all her
information confidential meaning it cannot be breached. The only reason confidentiality could be breached is
if Brenda’s life is in danger and she cannot communicate, therefore an advocate will make a non-bias
decision based on the information they receive. In order to manage this conflict of interest, professionals
should consider the consequentialism theory before any information is released. This involves the idea that
the correct moral response is related to the consequences of the action. Therefore, professionals would
consider her health and wellbeing as it is important that professional balance the risks alongside the benefits.
For example, if Brenda’s life is at risk and her private information is shared, then the consequence is that her
life is saved yet her health care wishes are broken.
A conflict of interest could arise between professionals and Martin due to high service costs. This is causes a
conflict because due to his recent redundancy Martin needs support managing his money compared to
pharmacy owners who may need to increase profits. The theory of deontology helps professionals to
effectively balance services and resources to help solve conflicts. Deontology means that all professionals
should stick to their responsibilities when making a decision because that is ethically correct. This means that
professionals can help Martin by balancing resources and costs within the setting to ensure they carry out
their duty of providing effective treatment – this could include providing Martin with statutory care. This is
beneficial for supporting Martin because it means his treatment will be fair, and professionals will focus on the
outcomes for him rather than the benefits (or negatives) for them.
A conflict may arise for Nusrat as she may need to decide whether or not to have a serious (and dangerous)
surgery to help reduce the amount of seizures she has due to her epilepsy. The theory of principlism can
overcome this as it has four main elements, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice.
In this situation, professionals should consider all the elements to appeal to Nusrat’s beliefs to help her decide
