A1 P1 Explain the features of two contrasting businesses

The businesses I will be comparing are Oxfam which is in the non-for-
profit organisation and Tesco which is in the Private sector.

The first business I will be looking at is Oxfam, this is an non-for-profit
international organisation. The structure of Oxfam is flat this means it
has few levels which makes it easier to communicate because of the two-
way communication system. It has wide span of control this means that a
single manager or supervisor oversees many subordinates. It also is de-
centralisation which is very beneficial in a business because then
everyone’s input is added in the final decision. Oxfam has limited liability
this means that the member of Oxfam are liable for the companies debts
or liabilities. If Oxfam do get into debts then they will not have to face
much personal finical risk.

The purpose of Oxfam is to help create a platform of lasting solution to
the injustice of poverty. They empower people to create a secure future
which is free from poverty. Oxfam operates in tertiary sector because
they sell products and, they also provide services to other charities. The
scope of Oxfam is international they have 19 organisations working
together with partners and local communities in more than 90 countries.
The staff and volunteers change every year but the latest one was in
2015-16 there were about 2,500 staff and 31,000 volunteers who were
based around the world.
Oxfam’s idea of success will be keep expanding their charity to more
countries. They are aiming for one goal which is to end the worlds
poverty.

The second business I will be talking about is Tesco, which falls in the
private sector. Tesco is a multinational groceries and general
merchandise retailer. Tesco is a public limited company (PLC). The
business structure is tall which has many levels, they have one way
communication which means that the orders are directly passed down to
the subordinates then to the employees. That have a narrow span of
control which means that the decisions will take longer. Tesco also has
long chain of command; the longer the chain of command the slower the
communication and potentially decisions are implemented.
Tesco has unlimited liability which means that

By limited liability it means that the company are liable for the
company’s debts or liabilities
