Recreationally Legal Marijuana
PHI103 Informal Logic
University of Arizona Global Campus
Marijuana has been highly debated for centuries and still is today. It is becoming
an increasingly popular topic, and laws are changing from state to state regarding the use,
possession, and growth of marijuana. As of 2021, 36 states legalized medicinal marijuana, and
16 states with D. C are recreationally legal. (WayofLeaf, 2020). Although it is not federally
legal, as of December 2020, the MORE act (the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment and
Expungement Act) is working to decriminalize and remove it from the controlled substances list.
Today’s argument is should marijuana be legal recreationally” If the arguments on each side of
the debate are presented well, then the debate may lead to the discovery of perspectives that each
party had not previously considered.” (Hardy,2015, p.1.4). This report will be discussing each
side of argument, using logic and critical thinking to discuss being for and against the
legalization of recreational marijuana.
Article for Recreational Marijuana
When it comes to the support of marijuana, there can be an overwhelming amount of
information. I came across a webpage with a pros and cons list of recreational marijuana on
ProCon.org. According to their webpage, their mission is “To promote civility, critical
thinking, education, and informed citizenship by presenting the pro and con arguments to
debatable issues in a straightforward, nonpartisan, freely accessible way.” (ProCon.org, 2018
p.1).
Premise 1: Marijuana has multiple health benefits. From cancer to anxiety, it can assist
in countless ways.
Premise 2: It would generate jobs and revenue for the country.
, Conclusion: Therefore, marijuana should be recreationally legal.
Evaluation of the Quality of the Argument for Recreational Marijuana
Each premise makes a strong point, and these are two of the twenty-five that seem to be
the most support of the conclusion. The first is the economic boost for the United States. Upon
digging deeper into the revenue and jobs that could be created, according to, Should
Recreational Marijuana Be Legal? “The marijuana industry (adult-use and medical) in the
United States could exceed $24 billion in revenue by 2025.” (ProCon.org, 2018). This tax
revenue alone could positively impact transportation, construction, real estate, and schools in the
United States, just to name a few income benefits. Legalizing this would also open jobs to
furthering the financial services, economy, and lives of many. “There were an estimated 122,814
legal full-time marijuana jobs in the United States as of Jan. 2017. A report from New Frontier
Data found that the cannabis industry could create a quarter of a million new jobs by 2020.”
(ProCon.org, 2018). Therefore, the premise is substantive support for the conclusion, having a
positive impact on many different areas of the economy and justifying the legalization of
recreational marijuana.
Secondly, marijuana has been found to help with countless medical issues from nausea,
seizures, pain management, and even stopping cancer cell growth. Although the benefits to
overall health have been proven repeatedly, they can be continually studied and monitored.
However, this also means it has the potential to create or improve even more health benefits.
Marijuana is a substance that can be used without becoming addictive and dangerous, unlike
opioids or alcohol. Studying even further could unmask its full potential, but testing could only
