I am a healthcare assistant on a ward for young adults with different forms of mental health
that is reporting on how mental disorders affect their daily life and to spread awareness in
this report. The two mental disorders I will research are bipolar type 2 and anorexia nervosa.
Anorexia nervosa is a severe eating disorder which affects their self image and
psychological health. individuals with this disorder tend to believe they have found
satisfaction in being the lowest weight they can be. This means eating as little as possible.
This can lead to severe ill health such as nutrient deficiency or starving themselves to death.
Those who suffer with anorexia nervosa tend to have low self image, they often think they
are overweight when in reality they are slowly killing themselves by starving. (NHS anorexia
nervosa 2021)
One of the many signs of anorexia nervosa is a huge amount of weight loss in a small
amount of time or disordered habits such as skipping most meals. Another sign is loss of
muscle mass, low blood pressure and low body temperature/hypothermia. The behaviours
with anorexia nervosa shown are restricted eating, excessive worrying with their weight, their
body size, discussing their body weight such as feeling overweight, wearing baggy clothes to
hide their figure and showing signs of depression. Although these are usually the signs,
some individuals might not feel or act this way. some may have aty[pical anorexia which
when they may not have abnormally low amount of body weight
bipolar is when a person's mood swings are heightened from intense lows (depression) or
highs (mania). Mania treatment for those who suffer with bipolar can be helped with meds or
therapy. Having episodic mania or depression often range from weeks to months. Mania
when a person starts to make irrational choices that stray away from their normal habits.
(Bipolar disorder - The Mix by Turner 2020)
one of the many signs of a depressive bipolar episode, you may feel sad, hopeless or
irritable. You also may lack energy to do everyday activities and may stay in bed for long
periods of time.another sign similar to this is a loss of interest to do the everyday activities.
This makes it hard for those with bipolar to hold down a job.One of the many signs of mania
is feeling an elevated high such as being overjoyed or happy. Another sign may be the lack
of sleep they have. Those with bipolar disorder may sleep 1-3 without feeling the effects of
not having much sleep because they are too easily distracted. After the episode has come to
an end, they may be surprised at their own behaviours during the episode. Although bipolar
cant be cured, it can be maintained if they were to take medication or go to cognitive
therapy. (NHS, BIPOLAR 2019) Overview - Bipolar disorder - NHS (www.nhs.uk)
Mental health is a person's condition to how it affects their psychological and emotional
wellbeing. it is a state in which the person is aware of their own abilities and is good at
coping with stressors in their life and react to it in a normal healthy way while working
productively and is able to contribute to his or her community. (world health organisation) .
