Protestant ideas were responsible for the development of the English Reformation in the
years 1529-1547. Explain why you agree or disagree with this view.
The Reformation came as a result of a long list of factors, these included doctrinal changes
within Europe as the Lutheran Princes and Martin Luther spread the new protestant
ideology. However Henry VIII’s wants were extremely significant in the Reformation, his
desire for an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, for power and for money
seem to be of his top priority. It can therefore be seen that protestant ideas were not
entirely responsible for the development of the English Reformation because of these other
important factions.
The Lutheran Princes belonged to the Schmalkaldic league and were influential in the spread
of Protestant ideas, especially across the Holy Roman Empire. The work of the Princes and
Martin Luther allowed for the new doctrines of Protestantism and the criticisms of the
catholic church to spread across Europe. There is evidence therefore that it was because of
this Henry VIII became persuaded to reform the English Church and consequently Protestant
ideas could be seen as responsible for the development of the English Reformation, without
them the idea of Protestantism would never had existed and the Church could not reform.
