Course Project I – Part II

What activities & experiences you & your child have engaged in might be
promoting healthy behavioral practices & an interest in physical activity?
My partner & I realize that Antony is at an age where he is able to absorb a plethora
of information. We chose to utilize this time to engage him in a variety of activities.
Together, we underst& that at Antony's age, he requires large amounts of mental
stimulation. We use every opportunity we get to take Antony on outings including,
the park, the zoo, & museums. We also desire for Antony to be athletically inclined
& encourage him to dabble in various sports activities. After a short time, Antony
does begin to get cranky & say he's tired. My partner & I underst& his biological
makeup & underst& that we need to boost his stamina. We have been taking him on
longer walks & increasing the distance each time, in hopes to achieve results. We
have also been encouraging him to ride his tricycle around the block. We believe
that sports will help teach coordination, balance, discipline, team building, &
promote positive relationships for Antony.
Describe development of your child's language & cognitive skills & discuss
how these might be affecting his or her interactions with you & your
responses.
After evaluation, Antony's language skills are average for his age. He is speaking in
full sentences, & for the most part, underst&s my directives indicating that his
cognitive skills are on par. Antony was considered cooperative, friendly, well-liked
by other children, a group leader, & self-confident. The assessor recommended that
we continue to engage in conversation with Antony & have him explain things in
more detail. Antony scored above average in underst&ing quantitative relationships,
but below average in copying designs, puzzle solving, & building block tower
exercises. Likewise, the examiner rated my parenting style, as well. Her results
stated that I was average in warmth & affection; however, I was more disciplined
that average. We recently had a second child & Antony began to regress, imitating
baby sounds & becoming whiny. I believe this is my firmness came into play. As I
noticed Antony's regression, I didn't want him to backtrack. I became more firm in
my parenting style, & discouraged Antony from acting like a baby. Overall, Antony
seems to be developing pleasantly.
How well is your child adapting to social situations in the home & outside
the home? Does your child have any behavior or emotional problems at
this point? Why do you think these problems are occurring & what are you
doing about them?
As previously mentioned, Antony is adapting well in both environments. He began
to regress a little after his sister was born, to which I did not encourage or promote.
Antony began to imitate her & became whiny. At this point, I decided to become
more stern with Antony & discouraged those types of behavior. I wanted him to
underst& that he isn't a baby anymore, therefore, acting like one wasn't acceptable.
For the most part, Antony takes pride in being a competent older sibling, & I didn't

have very many issues with him. However, my partner & I did get into an argument.
As a result, I was angry & departed the residence. Upon my return, Antony was
distraught & for days kept asking if I was going to run away. Realizing the damage
these actions caused, my partner & I spoke with Antony. We assured him that
everything was ok, going to be ok, & that I wasn't going anywhere. Since the talk,
Antony hasn't brought it up. Post-assessment, Antony was considered cooperative,
friendly, able to focus on tasks, self-confident, & well-liked by adults & children. My
partner & I did purchase a new home in a better neighborhood, to which Antony
seems to be adapting well to. We have encouraged play-dates & social interactions,
in hopes to develop even better language & social skills.

How would you characterize your parenting style? How have your specific
parenting techniques changed since infancy? In what ways do you think
your parenting style, or any other aspect of your parenting, has been
influenced by your cultural background or other experiences?
I would characterize my parenting style as involved, loving & supportive, yet firm &
directional. I am a firm believer in “there’s always room for improvement.” Being
said, I did have areas that I needed to adjust. Initially I wasn’t strict enough with
Antony & he was developing a bad attitude. I enforced structure, rules &
consequences which seemed to straighten him out; however, I was advised that I
needed to provide him with more affection. This advisement made me take a step
back & evaluate my methods & required me to figure out some sort of balance
between affection & discipline. I absolutely believe that my cultural background
influences my parenting style. I grew up in a lower, middle-class, minority family. My
gr&parents came to the U.S., with limited funds, & with strong work ethic, they were
able to make a comfortable life for themselves. I am first generation American, on
my dad’s side, & the expectations were always extremely high for me. My family
expected me to be the complete package, educated, beautiful, humble, kind,
independent, financially stable, strong-minded, etc. As I raise my stepchildren & my
virtual child, the expectations my family had for me are the same expectations I
have for my own children. Essentially, my family wanted to raise a child that was an
all-around good person, with her head on straight & priorities in order. Those values
& expectations are absolutely things that I want to implement in my parenting style,
& hope for similar results.
Describe two specific examples of changes in your child's behavior at age
4 that seem to stem from growth in cognitive & language ability since the
period of infancy (e.g., improvements in symbolic thinking, reasoning,
knowledge of the world, theory of mind).
From infancy to now, Antony has developed in so many ways & it’s difficult to
spotlight two specific ways. One area that Antony st&s out in & excels at is his
underst&ing of quantitative relationships. At 3 years old, he scored above average
in this category & we were advised to encourage his development in this area. At
