Introduction.
For this assignment I will be investigating, explaining and analysing the importance of Supply
Chains and Stock Control Management to my selected Businesses. My selected businesses
are Nike and The Co-op as they are 2 contrasting retail businesses, and are very successful.

15/C.P5 - Investigate the impact digital technology has on the retail and logistic
processes of two contrasting businesses.
For P5, I will investigate the impact digital technology has on retail and logistics processes of
JD Sports and the Co-op. I will complete this criteria by discussing and explaining what are
Customer Relations Management Systems, Electronic Point of Sales/Transactions, System
Integration and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).

Business one - JD Sports.
JD Sports, a Public Limited Company, is a chain of sports-fashion retailer stores around the
UK, with approximately 380 stores extending throughout the United Kingdom. JD Sports
Fashion PLC owns 21 businesses including JD and therefore, this means that it is a priority
for JD, as a company, to ensure that they are up to date with technologies for creating good
and healthy relationships with Shareholders, Suppliers, Employees and Customers.

Importance of Supply Chain and Stock Control Management to Business Success

Digital Technologies in JD Supply Chain.
I will now discuss the digital technologies used within the Supply Chain of JD Sports. First of
all, I will define what a Supply Chain is. A supply chain (or The Logistics Process) is a group
of stages which outlines the different stages of making, distributing and sellings goods (in
this case for JD Sports) from primary commodity (raw materials/unprocessed) to a fully
manufactured product ready to be sold. There are typically 6 stages which include the
producers of primary commodities making a deal and selling the commodities to a supplier.
The supplier will then either sell to a manufacturer or act as a manufacturer. Once the
products are made, the Manufacturer will sell to JD sports but before that, the products will
be distributed to the retail to the retail location where it is intended to be sold to the
customer(s). There will be a collection of digital technologies which will be used during the
Supply Chain and I will name and describe what the different digital technologies which are
being used.
Throughout the supply chain there will be use of Electronic Transactions, Inventory
Monitories, Security Systems, Electronic Point of Sales, Mobile devices and platforms
e-marketing.
Electronic transactions will be in use when selling the commodity products to the Supplier,
Manufacturer, Distributor (for services such as holding and delivering stock) then to the retail
location and finally the customer. Electronic transactions are used to sell the products
through the different stages of the supply chain to retain and increase the value of the
products throughout the whole process.
Inventory management/monitories are put into use as this will monitor all the ins and outs of
the products which are being sold from the first commodities to the suppliers, manufacturers,
distributors and then to the retail location. Inventory management/monitories are very
important as this will mean the business involved within the supply chain process is
accurate, organised, efficient and is not willing to lose any revenues because of small errors.
Security systems are put in place in order to ensure that each of the products are protected
and if there are any issues such as a door opening whilst the products are being transported,
CCTV footage can be used in order to avoid any casualties during the whole process.
Clock-in and clock-out cards or entries are also very useful because if there was ever any
issues during the supply chain process, these issues can be addressed to those and the
remaining of the workforce to minimalism casualties,
Electronic Point of Sales is used within the process of the consumer (the intended final user
of the product) making the purchase. It is important that the consumer is happy with making
their purchase and all options of payment are open such as contactless payment terminals
as well as payment terminals which allow phone payments and multiple currencies/payment
methods. If the intended final user of the product is not happy with the payment system, this
will be a huge loss for JD Sports.
Mobile devices are another product of digital technology which is useful working on the
supply chain. A Phone will allow those who are involved in the supply chain process to
communicate with each other to ensure that everything is being delivered with caution and
safely. A mobile phone can be used in forms of phone calls, email and messages. This can
be linked with platforms of e-marketing.
