19th Century Novel - The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Paper Reference - 8702/1

In Stevenson’s novella, Jekyll and Hyde, the author includes themes like murder and duality
which he presents through symbolism and juxtaposition in order to create the desired effect
of mystery and tension throughout. However, this was made difficult by the repression of
Victorian society and decency laws that prohibited graphic violence in all forms of media,
meaning Stevenson had to subtly incorporate his ideas using language. He uses the mystery
and tension to develop the character of Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde, allowing for the plot twist at the
end to surprise Victorian readers after an advanced and gradual building of mystery
throughout the book.
