In ‘Mother, Any Distance,’ Simon Armitage presents growing up as a difficulty, both in letting
go and developing as a person. However, Seamus Heaney in ‘Follower’ makes growing up
seem easier when following in the footsteps of your parents.

In ‘Mother, Any Distance,’ the poet uses caesura in the quite “Anchor. Kite” to show how his
mother is preventing him from growing up and leaving home. The lexical choice of the noun
“anchor” suggests that his mother is trying to hold him at place and keep him at their home,
which is making it even more difficult for him to leave. Furthermore, the chain between a
boat and an “anchor” is very tough and strong which is symbolic of how strong their bond is.
This bond is what keeps them together and happy, it is so strong that the mother doesn’t
want to let go. Also, the caesura further reinforces this idea because it stops the sentence
from carrying on and it cannot be developed or grow until it is removed. Most readers of this
poem would be empathetic towards Armitage as most of us have strong bonds with our
parents yurt we all know that once we’ve grown as people at home, we have to further
develop as people in a social environment.
