Comorbid Addiction (ETOH and Gambling)

Introduction

The client is a 53-year-old Puerto Rican female presenting to the clinic with comorbid

alcohol use disorder and gambling disorder symptoms. Mrs. Maria Perez states that she has

struggled with alcohol addiction since her late teens following her father's death. Little research

has been conducted on the effects of a parent's loss and its causation relationship with alcohol

use. Most studies have focused on parental alcohol abuse, raising young addicts, and the role of

the family in the alcoholic behavior of children. However, a research study associated parental

absence due to separation or death with smoking and alcohol consumption in adolescence and

adulthood (Lacey et al., 2018). She also states that she has been having more and more

difficulty maintaining her sobriety for the past two years since the opening of the new “Rising

Sun” casino near her home.

Ms. Perez states that she gets “such a high” when she is gambling and enjoys a drink or

two to help calm her during high-stake games. Different research studies have associated

substance and behavioral addictions, thereby affecting mental health disorder's clinical course

and the efficacy and rehabilitation efforts (Bodor et al., 2018). Research has also found

similarities in hormonal response between alcohol abuse and gambling disorder, and the

similarities can be classified to develop treatments in different types of addictive disorders (Li

et al., 2020). Therefore, it could be understood that the patient’s attempts to abstain from

drinking and getting such a high from the act of gambling that she needs a few drinks to even

out.

The client’s mental examination reveals that the patient is alert and oriented to person,

place, time, and event. She has dressed appropriately for the weather and time of the year. Her
