For eval add sentence starters: A strength of… This is a strength because… add for limitations too.
Police
We will first start with police officers. They are the first to arrive at a crime scene. Their job is to
protect the crime scene to prevent trespassers and to prevent anyone destroying the crime scene.
Other responsibilities include to carry out ‘initial actions’ – Golden Hour (catching the suspect within
the first 60 minutes when the crime took place, there is a lot of evidence and so this can be used to
catch the killer. They use a scene log for scene preservation. This will be created to maintain the
integrity of the scene by making sure that only essential people enter the scene. It is a record of the
names and times people who enter and leave the scene.
A strength of police officers is that they are available at all hours of the day 7 days a week at any
time of the year. This is a strength because police officers take different shifts, and this allows police
availability at any time. A limitation of police officers is that there is a lot of institutional racism in the
police force. This is a limitation because Institutional racism implies that people of colour and other
minorities must work harder in society in order to achieve the same outcomes as white people. A
case study that supports this is the Stephen Lawrence Case. On 22 April 1993, Stephen was killed by
a gang of white men in a racist attack. He had been waiting for a bus with a friend, when the gang
attacked them. Stephen's friend escaped unhurt, but Stephen died from his injuries. A report looking
at the death of Stephen Lawrence suggested the case had been handled in an institutionally racist
way by the police because the investigation had not been handled with the same care that a case
involving a white person would have been. Another limitation of police officers is that, they may be
well trained, but they are not trained in depth on everything, they only learn the generic things and
this is a limitation because in one scenario they may need to administer aid to a victim that is dying
but they may cause more harm and so they cannot wait for an ambulance as the victim will die
therefore they should be trained more to handle these types of situations.
As for cost, every year the government is cutting the budget for the police force and so there are less
police officers, the time to wait for an officer has differed from when the budget of the police force
was adequate. This also links to availability as there are less police officers for every area. They have
the expertise of a regular police officer, but they are not trained to handle firearms and are not
trained in depth of certain things as mentioned earlier.
