Standards and Quality
General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)-established 2010, regulator for
registered members, protects the public by upholding standards and sets
standards for education, training, ethics and CPD
National Clinical assessment Service (NCAS)- improve patient safety by resolving
concerns about professionals, provide active support, develop action plans,
recommend temporary suspension and pharmacists can report each other
National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE)- review medicines
and interventions, provide guidance and set quality standards and provide
recommendations to NHS on new and existing medicines as well as
diseases/conditions
Care Quality Commission (CQC)- regulate care provided by NHS, social services,
voluntary organisations and private companies, has independent inspections
and powers to: restrict services, prevent new admission, fixed penalties, suspend
or cancel registration and prosecutions
Monitor- regulates health services in England, set and enforce rules for
providers and commissioners of health services: foundation hospitals,
ambulance trusts, mental health organisations and community care. Ensure
continuation of quality services, work closely with CQC, set national prices and
local rules for NHS funded care, national tariff payment system and tackles anti-
competitive trusts. Support NHS trusts, foundation trusts and CCGS to get best
value for money for patients
Representation
Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS)- leadership body, open to
pharmacists/students, provide support for CPD/education and lobbying.
National Pharmacy Association (NPA)- UK trade association for community,
lobbying for community to enhance reputation of independents and influence
public policy, legal, clinical and ethical advice and insurance to protect
pharmacists
Company Chemist Association (CCA)- represents membership of largest 9 chains
(6500 pharmacies), empowers members to understand changing policies and
influence policy environment to expand all pharmacies
Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies (AIMp)- promotes, protects and
supports business, political and professional interests of members. Members are
independent pharmacists (5-300 chain) and linked to NPA
Pharmacy Voice- formed by NPA, CCA and AIMp to represent community.
Unified approach to national issues and give message as board made of members
from each organisation
Pharmacists’ Defence Association (PDA)- non-profit, created to look after
employees, provide legal defence and insurance
Guild of Hospital Pharmacists- provides advice, part of Unite (union) and
provide insurance
All Party Pharmacy Group (APPG)- raise awareness of pharmacy, made of MPs
and House of Lords. Consult with pharmacy representatives and report Health
minister
Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC)- represents, protect and
serves interests community. Recognised by Department of Health as
