● Barrett and Mclntosh(1991)
- Women gain less financial support than how much more the women's domestic
work supports the man
- Financial support from husband→'strings attached’
- Men usually make the more important decisions on money
management/decisions

● Kempson(1994)
- Family do not share resources such as money and food equally
- Low-income families→women had their own needs, seldom going out, and
eating smaller portions of food to support other family member's digestion
- Women have no entitlement to share household income/resources



Money management

● Pahl and Volger(1993)
- Two main types of control over family income:
1. The allowance system→ Men give their wives an allowance out of which
they have to budget to meet the family’s needs(man retains any extra
surplus/income for himself)
2. Pooling→both partners have access to income and joint responsibility for
expenditure(e.g. A joint bank account)



Decision-making

● Pahl and Volger(2007)
- Pooled income still might be controlled by the husband
- Men have more power in financial decisions
- Not as much as the allowance system would
