You are carrying out a placement in the traffic accident
department at the Highways agency. Your supervisor has
asked you to produce a report into the different factors
Vocational Scenario or that can cause road traffic collisions and injury. This
Context report will then be used as a resource to help drivers
involved in collisions understand how to be safe on the
road.
You will produce a written report evaluating, assessing and
explaining the interrelationships between the factors in road traffic
collisions and the relative importance of each factor in causing road
collisions and injury.
• Assess the interrelationship between the factors listed below,
explaining how and why each of the factors can cause road
Task traffic collisions and injury, either their own or in combination.
Road Traffic Collision and Injury Factors
o human: behaviour or inexperience, impairment or
distraction, attitudes to drinking alcohol, education,
passengers.
o environmental: weather conditions, traffic control, safety
cameras, signs impaired from view, congestion, state of
the road, design of roadways
o vehicle: type and condition of vehicle, braking system,
steering system, tyres, seat belts, air bags, crumple zones,
distribution of loads, overloading, maintenance, prior
damage or modifications
Evaluate the significance and relationship between these causal
factors and their relative importance in causing road traffic
, collisions and injury. As part of the evaluation, comment on how
the factors could possibly be avoided [if at all] or used to improve
road safety.
Checklist of evidence A written report which explains, assesses and evaluates all of the
required major factors (human, environmental and vehicle), and their
significance in road traffic collisions and injury.
