Examining national and local government policies on transport and the environment

Throughout the UK a lot of people will use different forms of transport to enable them to
travel to where they want to be. I will be looking at the national and local government
policies which have been put into place.

Local Transport Policies

Bus lanes: This is an area on the side of the road which would be provided by the
government so that buses can go through their routes without being stuck in a lot of
congestion. The road would be marked clearly as there would be a white line on the road
and it would be marked with ‘bus lane’ so the public will know. There is other transport that
can use the bus lane such as bicycles and taxis. There is a time restriction on these lanes and
it would be illegal for the public to use these lanes in the peak times. Bus lanes have been
introduced throughout all of the UK as they are very useful.

Cycle Tracks: There will be areas provided for cyclists on the road that will be only available
to them. This makes it safer for them and reduces the chance an accident occurring. By
having this it also helps to reduce the amount of congestion which is on the roads and
encouraging more people to cycle than drive. By cycling it mean that there would be fewer
fuels released into the environment. However there is conflict between people as they think
that lane for cyclists is just causing a problem and is taking up space which could be used for
cars which is a more common transport method. These tracks have been provided in a lot of
areas throughout the UK where people cycle a lot such as London where it is a popular
method of transport.

Park and ride systems: These were put into place by the government for several reasons,
such as to be more environmentally friendly and save on the amount of congestion which
there is on the roads. If people use this system then it would less people would be trying to
park in the city and would be less full. The systems are available for everyone and could help
people save money on car parking, they have been installed in areas which are busy such as
cities where there is a lot of congestion, an example is in Durham where there is a large
amount of traffic and not enough parking spaces.

Traffic Calming: This is where solutions would be set by the government in certain locations
to make the place for safe. This would be done by using things such as speed bumps on
roads where the speed should be slow, this will help to reduce the amount of people
speeding and therefore less accidents. These would be put in place in areas which have a lot
of residents to prevent accidents occurring due to peoples speed.

Road Pricing: This was put in place by the government and it is a tax where drivers are
charged if they are using their car very often and will try to stop them from doing so. There
