Principles of Drug Action – 4PY009 – Detailed lecture notes
Autonomic Nervous system (ANS), Part 1 (week 3)

The ANS

The body’s nervous system is a vast network of neurons that
carry information to and from all parts of the body, so
bringing about bodily activity.

The nervous system has two general classifications:

Central nervous system (CNS) – the brain and spinal cord.

Peripheral nervous system (PNS) – all the remaining nervous
tissue.

Afferent nerves – send information from the body to the
CNS. Efferent nerves – send information from the CNS to the
body

Definition of the ANS - the part of the nervous system
responsible for the control of bodily functions that are not
consciously directed.

The ANS therefore automatically controls many of the body’s
systems and functions, in conjunction with our endocrine
system.

For comparison, the somatic nervous system is mostly
concerned with the conscious control of skeletal muscle
(reflex responses are not under conscious control). Somatic
motor nerves are long single neurons that release
acetylcholine (ACh) and their effects are always excitatory.
