All the characters motivation being greed. The critic Thompsonʼs quote – “no grief”.
Poirotʼs motivation being a desire to know the truth.
Dr Sheppardʼs motivation being greed and money due to his “personal weakness”.
Throughout centuries, critics have examined crime fiction to explore possible motivations such
as greed. In Agatha Christieʼs novels the setting is limited and characters uncomplexed to allow
clear understanding of motivation and an apparent predictable list of suspects. However, in the
village of Kingʼs Abbot motivations overlap each other as greed and desire for Roger Ackroydʼs
wealth is given more focus than the tragedy of his death alongside greed being what causes
murder and crimes to occur. In this essay I will therefore discuss to what extent ‘The Murder of
Roger Ackroydʼ presents a society where everyone is motivated by greed.
In ‘Death on the Nileʼ, when discussing concepts of previous crimes, he has faced Poirot states
that “the most frequent motive is greed for money” followed by “love”, “pure-hate” and lastly
most uncommonly “beneficence”. This can be seen in ‘The Murder of Roger Ackroydʼ where
after Roger Ackroydʼs death sympathy and condolences are neglected with characters instead
wondering how they will or have benefitted from his murder. This is most clearly evidenced in
Mrs Ackroyd who in Chapter 10 states that she is “hurt” yet clarifies that she is hurt by “Rogerʼs
lack of confidence in (her)” believing that “that twenty thousand pounds ought to have been left
to (her) – not to Flora”. Mrs Ackroyd is described in as a most despicable woman who is “all
bones and teeth” representing the greediest and most perverse parts of the Kingʼs Abbot
Society as she cares most about wealth and appearances. In Chapter 14, eponymously titled
‘Mrs Ackroydʼ it is even revealed that she searched Mr Ackroydʼs desk in attempts to find his will
likely to see how much money that she had been left with her defence being that “men are so
secretive”. Additionally, another clue is revealed that it was in fact the same Mrs Ackroyd who
left the “silver table open” in an attempt to evaluate the price of the dagger. As stated by Dr
Sheppard “whether her designs upon Ackroydʼs silver had been strictly honourable” is left up
for interpretation to the reader however in a society which has been painted as purely
