Assess the value of the Pontefract Articles at revealing the reasons for mass support
of the Pilgrimage of Grace and the impact of the dissolution of the monasteries in
1536.

It is clear that the Pontefract Articles is valuable for showing the reasons for mass
support throughout the rebellions as it shows the demands that each of the different
groups want. The source also shows the large impact that the dissolution of the
monasteries has on people’s lives as it is a large reason for the Pilgrimage of Grace.

The source is greatly valuable because it shows that there was mass support for the
Pilgrimage of Grace as there are different demands for different groups and some
demands that are relevant for all groups. This is shown by each group having a
relevant demand for their groups, such as ‘To have the tenths and first fruits clearly
discharged of the same’ which mainly affects the ordinary rebels. It is also shown by
the demand ‘That the Lady Mary may be made legitimate’ which affects all of the
groups as people were very supportive of her and her catholic beliefs. It is suggested
that each group got involved to support the other groups within the rebellion as
although they have their own demands they also have demands that they want as a
collective from the King. Overall, it is clear that the source is valuable in revealing the
reason for mass support of the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536 as different groups were
willing to work together to develop the Pontefract Articles and get what they want
from the King.

The Pontefract Articles are valuable in showing that the dissolution of the
monasteries had a huge impact on people’s lives and left great gaps as religion was
so important to them. This is shown by the demand that ‘The suppressed abbeys
were to be restored to their houses, lands and goods’. It is clear that the people
wanted the monasteries to be returned to anyone who invested in it and to those
whose town or city it was in. Overall, it shows that the source has a large value in
showing the reasons for the dissolution of the monasteries because religion was so
important to everyone and it was something that almost everyone followed so the
dissolution of the monasteries had a great impact on so many people.

The source is also valuable in showing reasons for mass support of the Pilgrimage of
Grace and the impact of the dissolution of the monasteries as it was written by the
rebel leaders in December 1536 and it was the second set of demands issued by the
rebels. For example, the Lincoln Articles were the first set of demands that were put
together by the rebels not long before the Pontefract Articles were published. This
shows the value of the source as it shows that the rebels didn’t give up what they
were fighting for and were consistent with their demands as both of the articles
