at the time, man areas in the UK faced significant issues related to sanitation. The Act
aimed to establish a national system of sanitation by providing guidelines

before the Act, only around 5% of houses in urban areas had access to sewage
systems

by the early 20th century, this figure rose to over 80%

act empowered local authorities to take action against nuisances that were
detrimental to public health

in Manchester over 3000 houses condemned + demolished & over 40000 houses
improved

BUT

did not provide for the establishment of a national Public Health Service so many local
authorities left to fend for themselves

housing conditions did not improve —> act required every new house to have at least one
window one each room, but it didn't require the windows to be of certain size

eg in 1870s the depth rate from TB in London was 3.5x higher in the poorest
neighbourhoods than in the wealthiest
